Ethical Behavior and Relgion

Is ethical behaviour a consequence of religion or is it our natural trait? I think we are by nature ethical and this has to do with our evolutionary development. The essential element of evolution is survival and all trajectories focus only on our ability to survive in shifting environment. Community living is also a consequence of evolution (there is safety in numbers) and ethical behaviour is necessary for the survival of community.

By this logic it seems that ethical behaviour is embedded in religion due to our basic nature and not as a consequence of it.
